Legal flags you can display

You can show one of the following flags on the left-hand side of your number plate:

  • Union Flag (Union Jack)

  • Cross of St George

  • Cross of St Andrew (Scottish Saltire)

  • Red Dragon of Wales

Matching identifiers (letters) you can use

If you display a flag, it must be paired with a matching identifier, such as:

  • UNITED KINGDOM / United Kingdom / UK

  • GREAT BRITAIN / Great Britain / GB

  • ENGLAND / England / ENG / Eng

  • SCOTLAND / Scotland / SCO / Sco

  • WALES / Wales

  • CYMRU / Cymru / CYM / Cym

Placement rules (important)

  • The flag must be above the identifier letters.

  • Both must be on the left-hand side of the plate.

  • They cannot be printed in the margin area.

  • Neither the flag nor the letters can be more than 50mm wide.

  • The flag/identifier must not obscure any part of the registration number.

Driving abroad: do you need a UK sticker?

When driving outside the UK, whether you need a white oval UK sticker depends on what’s already on your plate.

You

do not

need a UK sticker if:

  • Your number plate shows the UK identifier with the Union Flag.

You

do

need a UK sticker if your plate has:

  • Numbers and letters only (no flag/identifier)

  • A GB identifier with the Union Flag

  • A European Union flag

  • The England/Scotland/Wales national flag

Country-specific notes

  • Spain, Cyprus and Malta: you must display a UK sticker regardless of what’s on the plate.

  • Republic of Ireland: you do not need a UK sticker, regardless of what’s on the plate.

Also:

  • UK stickers replaced GB stickers from 28 September 2021 for driving abroad.

  • Do not put the sticker on your number plate.

Green “flash” number plates (zero-emission only)

If your vehicle is zero-emission, you may display a number plate with a green flash on the left-hand side (in place of a flag area).

FAQ: Can I put a green flash plate on a petrol/diesel hybrid (including hybrid electric)?

No. The vehicle must be zero-emission to be eligible for the green flash.

FAQ: Do I only need to change my rear plate to add “UK” for European travel?

Not necessarily. If you’re updating plates to include an identifier, remember:

  • The identifier must be on the far left and must not obscure the registration.

  • For travelling abroad, the simplest “no-sticker” option is Union Flag + UK on the plate (where accepted).

  • Otherwise, you may need a UK sticker, depending on your plate design and destination country.

Always check the latest official guidance before ordering plates for overseas travel, as requirements can vary by country and can change over time.
